- The Universal Acceptance (UA) Day was held on 02nd May 2025 at Global Towers, Sri Lanka, jointly organized by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Theekshana R & D, and SLTMobitel, promising an evening of enlightenment and innovation.
- The event was graced by the Secretary of Digital Economy, Mr. Waruna Dhanapala, and Dr. Manodha Gamage, Advisor to the Hon. Deputy Minister, as the Chief Guests, along with Prof.JB Dissanayake. Dr. Mothilala de Silva, the Chairman of SLTMobitel, was also present, while Mr. Champika Wijayathunga represented ICANN. Moreover, the event involved senior government officials with other stakeholder organizations such as LK Domain Registry, ICTA, and SLT.
- Prof. Damitha Karunarathna, the Chairman of Theekshana R&D, delivered the welcome address and marked the formal inauguration of the UA Day Celebrations in Sri Lanka. Mr. Champika Wijayathunga followed the Chairman of Theekshana R&D and enlightened the audience on ICANN’s role in Internet Governance. Mr. Harsha Wijayawardhana gave an introduction to Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) and Universal Acceptance.
- The event featured thought-provoking addresses from key figures, including Mr. Waruna Dhanapala, Acting Secretary to the Ministry of Digital Economy, and Dr. Manodha Gamage, Advisor to the Hon. Deputy Minister, highlighting the national drive toward digital inclusivity. A special moment during the event was the official launch of IDN websites, marking a major milestone in Sri Lanka’s digital transformation journey.
- Further discussions on the importance of Internet Governance were led by Mr. Kasun Tharaka and Ms. Sagarika Wickramasekera, a Board of Trustees member of ISOC, reinforcing the need for policy, technical, and community-level involvement. The evening concluded with a powerful closing address by Prof. J. B. Dissanayake.
